Refugee lawyers charge either on an hourly basis, or on a set fee (which is usually based on the amount of time the lawyer estimates your case will take). An experienced lawyer in this field will usually charge between $200 and $250 per hour. For handling a refugee claim from start to finish, a lawyer will usually charge about $4,000 in legal fees, which together with taxes and disbursements, will total close to $5,000. It's worth noting that the legal aid tariff for handling a refugee case would be $80 per hour, and total about $2,000 in fees. Because this may be less than the lawyers' overhead, many lawyers are reluctant to take on many legal aid cases. |
